Symptoms of Pink Eye in Chicago, IL

Pink eye is a condition that is known by its medical term, conjunctivitis. While it can affect people of all ages, we at Eye Society in Chicago typically see cases of pink eye in children. This is because pink eye can be contagious, spreading rapidly among kids and their teachers in classrooms and daycare centers.

Symptoms of Conjunctivitis

You should know that pink eye occurs in three types:

  • Allergic conjunctivitis tends to make patients feel like their eyes are burning. It usually occurs in both eyes and it is the only type that is not contagious.
  • Bacterial conjunctivitis can occur in one or both eyes. You will experience a yellow-green discharge from the eyes and this can cause your eyelids to become stuck to one another while you sleep.
  • Viral conjunctivitis results in patients experiencing itchy and watery eyes, with some of them also becoming more sensitive to light.

How Your Optometrist at Eye Society Can Help Treat Conjunctivitis

After you’ve undergone an examination by your optometrist to determine what kind of pink eye you have, it’s time for a customized treatment plan made solely for you. Allergic conjunctivitis can be remedied by allergy medicine.

If you have bacterial conjunctivitis, the optometrist will usually recommend that you use antibiotic eye drops or ointment at home until the condition clears up. In cases of viral conjunctivitis, your optometrist will typically instruct you to take care of the problem by placing a cool, wet washcloth to your eyes throughout the day until symptoms subside.
